XP integrated in Ubuntu (sun’s virtualbox)
ok, the title’s not exactly correct but it seems like it. i just installed virtualbox in ubuntu (host) right now and installed XP (guest). Virtualbox is kinda like vmware, minus the file size. Virtualbox installer is 20+mb vs. vmware’s 80mb. very very small footprint and run’s pretty good on my low spec desktop PC. (3Ghz P4, 1Gb RAM).
It currently runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris as Host. It’s first major release was last May 2, 2008 since being acquired by Sun Microsystems.
one nice feature of this VB (virtualbox) is its “seamless mode” which combines xp and ubuntu as one. xp taskbar is stack below the ubuntu’s and all of xp and ubuntu’s windows are presented as one. a good screenshot of this is more explainable.

pidgin and yahoo messenger
notice the taskbar of xp and ubuntu, pretty nice eh? i’ll update this one in a bit. i’ll poke more into this virtualbox thing for now.

@Rosario: Actually, Virtualbox creates an image file inside Ubuntu file system called “Virtual Disk Images”. Harddisk is virtualized on this image file, as well as soundcards, network card/s and video cards. So, dual-booting and virtualization (through virtualbox) is not the same thing.
Here’s a link for a step-by-step instruction on how to install virtualbox with XP as guest, as well as booting up XP inside it:

There’s a screenshot for every step so you’ll surely won’t get lost during the process.Rock on, man! :)
Btw, a lot of people get stuck with their USB drive in Virtualbox (Its disabled by default). You might also want to check this out also:

nice post on Virtualbox. VB is better than VMware but how do you compare VB and Wine?

Wine is for virtualization of windows software inside Ubuntu (or other linux distros). So, you could run Dreamweaver, Mirc, windows games, etc etc.
Virtualbox on the other hand virtualizes the entire OS. Its like running the entire OS from inside another OS. In effect, you could run Windows XP inside Ubuntu. Or Run Ubuntu inside Vista or XP etc etc.
BTW, wine cannot virtualize every single softwares on windows. you could check out their website for the list of runnable apps.
